Japanese · Frederiksberg

This is Asian comfort food in Frederiksberg. The place is called Gohan, which literally means rice in Japanese, and true to the name, it is all about donburi built on rice.

The place

Gohan sits on Ærøvej in Frederiksberg and keeps it simple: a few seats inside, but the focus is mostly takeaway. This is neighborhood food, the kind of place you build into your week rather than save for a special occasion.

What we ate

First up a Japanese classic, oyakodon: a crispy, tender cutlet and silky eggs mixed with tonkatsu sauce and vegetables, savory, rich and perfect over rice. Next, glazed adobo-style pork, tender and garlicky in a soy-based glaze, topped with a jammy egg and soft eggplant, deep and savory. A quick miso soup break, then gyudon: tender beef and onions simmered in soy, mirin and ginger, rich and slightly sweet, again perfect over rice.

The sides

The sides hold their own. Crispy chicken karaage. Homemade kimchi, tangy and sharp. Golden pork spring rolls. And dynamite shrimp with that mild, creamy heat. Order a couple to round out a bowl and you have a full spread.

Who it is for

This is your weeknight rice-bowl move, ideal for takeaway on the Frederiksberg side of town when you want something warm, comforting and genuinely Japanese without a big production. Grab a donburi, add a side, and you are set.

But now… the real question is… where do we go next?
