Den Vandrette

Belanja is running a Malaysian-style kitchen takeover at Den Vandrette on Havnegade, one of the city's most beloved natural wine bars. Malaysian food and natural wine in the same room, what is not to like.

The place

Den Vandrette is a natural wine bar on Havnegade by the harbor, and for this run Belanja has taken over the kitchen with a bold Malaysian-inspired menu matched to the bar’s natural wines. It is a pop-up, so it is a moment: catch it while it lasts, running until August 30.

What we ate

Inspired by Mexican tostilocos, their version uses rice paper crisps with tamarind, tangy pickles, fresh herbs and a squeeze of lime, crunchy and zesty, the perfect way to wake up your palate. Pulut panggang, grilled sticky rice in a banana leaf, smoky and satisfying, made vegetarian. Add the spicy sambal, achar pickles and chili dip on the side to mix and match throughout. Grilled lettuce finished with fermented bean curd, ginger oil and crispy curry leaves, smoky and loaded with umami. Fluffy wine brioche with burnt coconut butter and a curry dip, rich and made to scoop. Then the curry laksa, and pandan coconut rice with lion’s mane mushroom rendang and crispy shallots, bold, rich and pure comfort.

Dessert

Corn ice cream with sago and anise, plus lemongrass cream with sesame and pickled cherry. Smart, playful and just salty-sweet enough to end things right.

Who it is for

Go with someone who loves both bold Southeast Asian flavor and natural wine, order the vegetarian sharing menu or à la carte, and treat it as a limited window worth chasing. These takeovers are exactly the kind of thing worth showing up for.

But now… the real question is… where do we go next?
